Use Cases
We work hand-in-hand with CERN equipment owners to develop state-of-the-art designs based on their specifications, agreeing with the Groups, who maintain the final responsibility of the equipment, the main design choices.
CHiC magnet

About the Magnet:
CHiC magnet is a demonstrator magnet for Carbon Ion Therapy featuring closed-circuit cooling and Stress-Managed-Like (SML) design.
Our Desing Office supported the magnet experts with full 3D modelling and drafting activities.

Overview
CHiC demonstrator aims to achieve a maximum bore field of 4 T, with continuous ramping up to ±0.4 T/s, featuring coils made by Nb-Ti strands. The formers are additively manufactured from 316L stainless steel powder using selective laser melting (SLM).

Challenge
The CHiC magnet represents one of the first magnets cooled by conduction, namely not being immersed in an He bath. Cooling channels shall be installed as close as possible to the magnet coils to improve the cooling efficiency. The actual restrictions of the addictive manufacturing process prevent the formers to be manufacture in one piece.
Solutions
Our contribution focused on the design of all the mechanical components, developing proper design features such as the brazing interfaces intended to seal the cooling channels between different former sectors. This innovative application of brazing to AM 316L components at CERN has been supported with the realization of samples for tests.
